How a SAH Mom Makes $2k/Month with Essential Oils: Q&A with Jennifer Davis
One thing I greatly admire is work-at-home, entrepreneurial moms.
I work at home, and dream of building my own business. I constantly have so many ideas running through my head.
So, when I get the chance to learn from moms who are already living my dream, I try to learn as much as I can!
Meet Jennifer Davis:
Jennifer, a Torah-keeping WAH mom, works with DoTerra essential oils as an independent wellness advocate and makes more than $2,000/month on average. (Learn more about why she chose DoTerra). Ever wonder if it’s really possible to build a business as an essential oil rep? Well, I sat down with Jennifer to learn a little from one of the best.
WHAT WERE YOUR FIRST STEPS IN STARTING YOUR BUSINESS, INSPIRING WELLNESS?
My first simple step was reaching out to friends about my new business. This is a relationship business and building relationships with others is the most important aspect. I’m constantly making new friends and connections.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WORK WEEK LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
I spread my time between administration, marketing, teaching, working with families one on one over the phone or in person. Some weeks it might be 10 hours but really busy weeks it can be 30. I plan one really busy week a month so my husband knows what to expect and the other weeks I have a lighter schedule.
When you consistently put in 20 hours a week, you see more growth so when I started out, I always worked at least 20 hours.
SO, TELL ME MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU ACTUALLY DO.
My main job is to serve others, help them find the right essential oils that work best for their family. Nothing I do is difficult, but I do have to be on the ball with follow-up on all tasks. I am the only one, so it is up to me to grow my business.
There is some troubleshooting with this, so I usually offer a few samples to experiment with while teaching them basic usage and safety because that is usually where people get overwhelmed. I make it easy and I hold their hand until they feel more comfortable.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Once they have their own oils in their home, I am their support in continued education. Not only do I serve my users but I also have builders who need leadership support so I work closely with them as they grow their business and walk them through the steps to also lead their own team of customers and builders.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE BUSINESS AND OTHER TASKS AS A STAY-AT-HOME MOM?
As a mom of three kids, who I also homeschool, setting up boundaries are really important. My kids get my 100% and then my business gets my 100%. I don’t multitask as it prevents me from being the best mom and business owner I can be.
DOES YOUR FAITH FACTOR INTO HOW YOU RUN YOUR BUSINESS?
My faith is a huge part because I ask a God to bring me those he wants me to work with but mainly my business was an answer to prayer 4 years ago. Very quickly it replaced my income and then my husband’s VA benefit while he was in school. But mainly because it’s the vehicle that will ultimately allow him to focus on ministry full time as well as ministry that God will call me to.
WHAT’S ONE THING YOU WISH YOU HAD KNOWN WHEN YOU BEGAN?
In the beginning you lack strategy and so having leadership is really important. I didn’t have that starting out because my leader and I started together. I would have strategically done things a little different. Hiring a business coach is another I wish I did but with limited funds I did what I could.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THOSE INTERESTED IN DOING WHAT YOU DO, BUT AFRAID TO START?
I hear many moms tell me there is no way they could start up a business like this, but I know they can with a good routine and the support of a loving husband. Having a passion to serve others is all it takes.
When you are exhausted and at your limit; you think of all the people who are blessed with better wellness because you took the time to share a drop of an essential oil with them.
